    A Semantic Web approach to ontology-based system: integrating, sharing and analysing IoT health and fitness data

    With the rapid development of fitness industry, Internet of Things (IoT) technology is becoming one of the most popular trends for the health and fitness areas. IoT technologies have revolutionised the fitness and the sport industry by giving users the ability to monitor their health status and keep track of their training sessions. More and more sophisticated wearable devices, fitness trackers, smart watches and health mobile applications will appear in the near future. These systems do collect data non-stop from sensors and upload them to the Cloud. However, from a data-centric perspective the landscape of IoT fitness devices and wellness appliances is characterised by a plethora of representation and serialisation formats. The high heterogeneity of IoT data representations and the lack of common accepted standards, keep data isolated within each single system, preventing users and health professionals from having an integrated view of the various information collected. Moreover, in order to fully exploit the potential of the large amounts of data, it is also necessary to enable advanced analytics over it, thus achieving actionable knowledge. Therefore, due the above situation, the aim of this thesis project is to design and implement an ontology based system to (1) allow data interoperability among heterogeneous IoT fitness and wellness devices, (2) facilitate the integration and the sharing of information and (3) enable advanced analytics over the collected data (Cognitive Computing). The novelty of the proposed solution lies in exploiting Semantic Web technologies to formally describe the meaning of the data collected by the IoT devices and define a common communication strategy for information representation and exchange

    On The Feasibility Of Centrally-Coordinated Peer-To-Peer Live Streaming

    In this paper we present an exploration of central coordination as a way of managing P2P live streaming overlays. The main point is to show the elements needed to construct a system with that approach. A key element in the feasibility of this approach is a near real-time optimization engine for peer selection. Peer organization in a way that enables high bandwidth utilization plus optimized peer selection based on multiple utility factors make it possible to achieve large source bandwidth savings and provide high quality of user experience. The benefits of our approach are also seen most when NAT constraints come into play

    Attualmente il panorama informatico Ăš dominato dai dispositivi mobile: smartphone e tablet pc dominano incontrastati la scena del mercato elettronico. Questo comporta un radicale ripensamento e cambiamento del software, le web app e le mobile application richiedono infatti una sempre maggiore reattivitĂ  dell’interfaccia utente, la persistente connessione a Internet e l’interazione con una moltitudine di dispositivi esterni. Il progettista di software deve oggi far fronte a tutta una serie di problematiche, l’aumentata complessitĂ  dei sistemi e i sempre piĂč ristretti tempi di sviluppo e consegna richiedono compromessi tra la semplicitĂ  delle tecniche di progettazione e l’efficienza del prodotto ottenuto. Le architetture ad eventi in primis, unitamente al paradigma di programmazione asincrona, si pongono come soluzione ottimale a queste esigenze. L’obbiettivo principale di questa tesi Ăš quello di offrire una panoramica generale sullo stato dell’arte delle architetture ad eventi focalizzandosi sul ruolo che esse assumono nel contesto delle applicazioni moderne, intendendo principalmente con questo termine le web application e le mobile application. Partendo dal concetto di programmazione sincrona e parallela si giunge a descrivere un terzo modello, il modello asincrono, di fondamentale importanza per i sistemi event-driven. Utilizzando come principale linguaggio di riferimento JavaScript si affrontano le problematiche legate alla stesura del codice per la gestione degli eventi, l’asincronicitĂ  intrinseca degli eventi e l’utilizzo di funzioni di callback portano a produrre codice di difficile lettura e manutenzione. Si analizzano quindi in dettaglio i pattern fondamentali e le tecniche attualmente utilizzate per l’ottimizzazione della gestione del codice e delle problematiche esposte fornendo numerosi esempi esplicativi

    Integration of heterogeneous data sources and automated reasoning in healthcare and domotic IoT systems

    In recent years, IoT technology has radically transformed many crucial industrial and service sectors such as healthcare. The multi-facets heterogeneity of the devices and the collected information provides important opportunities to develop innovative systems and services. However, the ubiquitous presence of data silos and the poor semantic interoperability in the IoT landscape constitute a significant obstacle in the pursuit of this goal. Moreover, achieving actionable knowledge from the collected data requires IoT information sources to be analysed using appropriate artificial intelligence techniques such as automated reasoning. In this thesis work, Semantic Web technologies have been investigated as an approach to address both the data integration and reasoning aspect in modern IoT systems. In particular, the contributions presented in this thesis are the following: (1) the IoT Fitness Ontology, an OWL ontology that has been developed in order to overcome the issue of data silos and enable semantic interoperability in the IoT fitness domain; (2) a Linked Open Data web portal for collecting and sharing IoT health datasets with the research community; (3) a novel methodology for embedding knowledge in rule-defined IoT smart home scenarios; and (4) a knowledge-based IoT home automation system that supports a seamless integration of heterogeneous devices and data sources

    A Proposal for a Two-Way Journey on Validating Locations in Unstructured and Structured Data

    The Web of Data has grown explosively over the past few years, and as with any dataset, there are bound to be invalid statements in the data, as well as gaps. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is gaining interest to fill gaps in data by transforming (unstructured) text into structured data. However, there is currently a fundamental mismatch in approaches between Linked Data and NLP as the latter is often based on statistical methods, and the former on explicitly modelling knowledge. However, these fields can strengthen each other by joining forces. In this position paper, we argue that using linked data to validate the output of an NLP system, and using textual data to validate Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud statements is a promising research avenue. We illustrate our proposal with a proof of concept on a corpus of historical travel stories

    Effect of chemical resistance inducers on the control of Monosporascus root rot and vine decline of melon

    The effect of the resistance inducers methyl jasmonate (MeJA), acybenzolar-S-methyl (BTH) anddipotassium hydrogenphosphate (K2HPO4) was tested by seed soaking and by foliar application to determine whether these resistance inducers controlled root rot and vine decline of melon caused by Monosporascus cannonballus. Tests were carried out in pots and under field conditions in a two-year trial. Application of MeJA to melon seed significantly reduced symptoms of melon root rot and vine decline in soil artificially inoculated with M. cannonballus, and seeds treated with BTH and K2HPO4 produced plants with a slightly greater resistance to the pathogen. Greenhouse experiments in soil naturally infected with M. cannonballus in 2006 showed that MeJA treatments by seed soaking followed by foliar applications decreased the severity of the disease. In 2007, both MeJA and BTH significantly reduced root rot and vine decline, but K2HPO4 was ineffective. The resistance inducers differentially induced the synthesis of a number of pathogenesis related (PR) protein isoenzymes, markers of induced resistance in the root system. Using MeJA to induce resistance to root rot and vine decline of melon caused by M. cannonballus may provide a practical supplement to an environmentally friendly disease management when it is combined with appropriate integrated agronomic practices.&nbsp

    Antithymocyte Globulin in Reduced-Intensity Conditioning Regimen Allows a High Disease-Free Survival Exempt of Long-Term Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease

    AbstractNonmyeloablative (NMA) regimens allow the use of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in patients considered unfit for standard myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimens using high-dose alkylating agents with or without total body irradiation (TBI). Reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens, based on fludarabine (Flu), busulfan (Bu), and rabbit antithymocyte globulin (r-ATG), represent an intermediate alternative between NMA and MAC regimens. This platform was subsequently optimized by the introduction of i.v. Bu and the use of 5 mg/kg r-ATG, based on the hypothesis that these modifications would improve the safety of RIC allo-HSCT. Here we report a study conducted at our institution on 206 patients, median age 59 years, who underwent allo-HSCT after conditioning with Flu, 2 days of i.v. Bu, and 5 mg/kg r-ATG (FBx-ATG) between 2005 and 2012. The prevalence of grade III-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was 9%, and that of extensive chronic GVHD was 22%. Four-year nonrelapse mortality (NRM), relapse, and overall survival (OS) rates were 22%, 36%, and 54%, respectively. NRM tended to be influenced by comorbidities (hematopoietic cell transplantation–specific comorbidity index [HCT-CI] <3 versus HCT-CI ≄3: 18% versus 27%; P = .075), but not by age (<60 years, 20% versus ≄60 years, 25%; P = .142). Disease risk significantly influenced relapse (2 years: low, 8%, intermediate, 28%, high, 34%; very high, 63%; P = .017). Both disease risk (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: intermediate, 2.1 [0.8 to 5.2], P = .127; high, 3.4 [1.3 to 9.1], P = .013; very high, 4.0 [1.1 to 14], P = .029) and HCT-CI (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: HCT-CI ≄3, 1.7 (1.1 to 2.8), P = .018) influenced OS, but age and donor type did not. The FBx-ATG RIC regimen reported here is associated with low mortality and high long-term disease-free survival without persistent GVHD in both young and old patients. It represents a valuable platform for developing further post-transplantation strategies aimed at reducing the incidence of relapse, particularly in the setting of high-risk disease
